Builders and DevelopersWe are working with various builders and developers to protect trees on construction sites, to interpret tree protection ordinances and to assess trees during the planning phase. We are able to determine the appropriateness of trees on specific sites, the presence of pest and diseases and the overall health and structure of the trees. With this information the builders and developers are able to determine how to manage the trees and abided by the local tree related ordinances. Crystal Springs, MississippiWe are working with an environmental consulting firm to protect and save trees in an area that has been contaminated with PCB's. We are assessing the trees in the cleanup area, determining appropriate protection measures, recommending tree maintenance, and supervising the tree care. This project should last approximately two years. Columbus Air Force Base Tree InventoryWe are inventorying all of the trees on the portion of the Columbus Air Force Base. We are using customized tree inventory software, Pocket PC's and Global Positioning Satellite hardware. The GPS coordinates are automatically entered into a form on ArcPad mapping software. The system uses Microsoft Access and ESRI ArcView. An estimated 5000 trees and 200 planting spaces will be inventoried. Executive Director for Trees For AlabamaWe are providing organizational management and marketing services for this grassroots organization. We are developing management and marketing plans, obtaining private and governmental sources of funding and serving as a contact point for the organization. Expert WitnessWe are currently serving as an expert witness on cases dealing with tree values, tree hazards and tree liabilities. These cases are in Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama and Oklahoma. Georgia Department of TransportationI am developing a system that the Georgia Department of Transportation can use to determine the value of trees in front of outdoor advertising signs. This system will be tested by the Department and the Roadside Enhancement and Beautification Council and potentially will be challenged in court. Insurance Companies and Power CompaniesWe have been working with many insurance companies and power companies to determine damages done to trees from fire, wind and improper pruning. We also are doing work concerning potential tree root damage to basement walls, tree management and Madison, Georgia Tree InventoryWe are inventorying all of the trees within the City of Madison. We are taking ARcView data and using ArcPad to develop an electronic form to gather the data in the field. We are using Pocket PC's and Global Positioning Satellite hardware. McClellan Assessment and RecommendationsThe former Fort McCellan Army base has been decommissioned and is being used for many different purposes. The original base contained 18,000 acres, comprised of residential, industrial, retail, recreation areas and mostly wooded mountains. A National Wildlife Refuge was designated and developed with 12,000 of the original acres, including the largest Longleaf Forest. The remaining 6,000 will be redeveloped into residential, retail, industrial, and recreational areas under the guidance of the Anniston Joint Powers Authority. Our role is to assist the JPA in maintaining trees in the areas that are being developed. We will assess the trees that are located within the most developed portions of the development and recommend care for the trees. We will developed ordinances, covenants and guidelines to manage the trees. We will also develop a job description for a manager of the urban and rural forests. Meridian, Mississippi Urban Forest WorkshopWe will be teaching a two day workshop on April 29th and 30th, 2004. This workshop will be open to the public, but will be geared toward governmental tree managers. There will be Continuing Education Credits for Certified Arborist and Registered Foresters. Residential Tree Assessments and Pest DiagnosisWe work with many residential clients in helping to manage their trees. This work includes diagnosing pests, hazards and maintenance needs, protecting trees prior to and during construction and determining their values. This work constitutes the majority of our projects and stretches our staff from Mississippi to Georgia. Rolling Hills RC&D Council Certified Arborist TrainingWe will be holding a series of study sessions to prepare individuals to take the Certified Arborist Test. This designation is sponsored by the International Society of Arboriculture. The classes will begin in February 13, 2004 and run for the next four Fridays. Recent Past ProjectsAtlanta Sewer ConstructionThe City of Atlanta is in the process of constructing additional sewer lines to relieve the existing over loaded lines. Our role in this project has been to identify significant trees prior to final design, recommend protection measures, inspect the trees during the construction phase and recommend remedial measures where necessary. Auburn Tree AssessmentsThe City of Auburn has a number of trees along a major thoroughfare that cause them concern. We will inspect the trees along with City Staff and local residents. The data collected will be inputted into Tree Risk Management Software by Natural Path Forestry Consultants, Inc. This program will allow us to print written reports for each tree. Carroll County, Georgia Hands-On Landscape WorkshopBrian Darr is serving as an instructor for this workshop for landscape professionals. Brian is teaching an outdoor session about tree care and pest diagnosis. Carrollton Tree Inventory and Canopy Study SamplingThe City of Carrollton, Georgia is sampling the trees and canopy cover in several different types of developments throughout the city. The results of this sampling will be used to develop a brochure. We are conducting the inventory and canopy study and will be developing the brochure. In the near future, we will be using our online inventory system to conduct a street tree inventory. Chapel Hill High School Landscape PlanChapel Hill High School in Douglasville, Georgia is in the process of planting trees throughout their newly construction campus. Our role is to teach the students about trees and their uses and assist them in developing an appropriate planting program. Dekalb County, Georgia TrainingOur firm is providing training to the Dekalb County Inspection staff. This training is following the Certified Arborist Handbook and consists of one day of training per month for a period of six months. At the end of the training, the staff will take the test to become Certified Arborists. Dublin Street Tree InventoryWe are conducting a street tree inventory for the City of Dublin, Georgia. This inventory will use Canopy Tree Inventory System by Arbor Vision. The data will be inputted using handheld devices. The data will be collected by our staff along with city staff and volunteers who will be trained in inventory collection and software useage. Fayette County, Alabama Health DepartmentWe worked with an architect and the Fayette County Engineering Department to protect and manage a state champion tree on a construction site. Guin StreetScapeThe main highway through Guin, Alabama is being relocated and the old highway is being reconfigured. We are assessing the trees along the highway as well as the city's Water Park and industrial park. We are drawing maps and plans on CAD programs, writing a report of our findings and developing plan to plan additional trees. Jackson, Mississippi Street Tree InventoryWe recently completed inventorying the street trees in the downtown area of Jackson, Mississippi. We tallied over 850 trees and developed our new Online Tree Inventory System. Langston Chapel Elementary and Middle SchoolsWe worked with the staff at these two schools in Statesboro, Georgia. This project consisted of introducing urban forestry to their ciriculum, planting trees at arbor day and working with the maintenance staff. Macon, Georgia Housing Project Tree AssessmentsWe recently completed reviewing the tree care recommendations of a Landscape Architect. We assisted the housing authority determine the best methods to meet the desires and to maintain healthy trees. Montgomery Urban Forestry Management PlanThe City of Montgomery, Alabama is interested in assessing their current policies and procedures concerning the trees throughout the city. The first phase of our involvement is to assess their ordinances, policies, and resources. We will also be conducting a variety of meetings and discussions to develop a "Tree Vision" for the city. From this information, we will form goals and objectives. The final phase will include a written report discussing the current situation, vision and recommended management plan. 'Ol Colony Golf CourseWe helped the 'Ol Colony Golf Course in Tuscaloosa, Alabama determine their tree maintenance needs. These needs included lightning protection, fertilization, aeration and watering. Pennahachee Creek Park Development PlanThe City of Vienna, Georgia owns land along the Pennahachee Creek. This land is currently under utilized. The city desired to develop a park on this land. We are inventorying the assets on this property and serving as a conduit to develop a plan to develop the land into a park. We are using CAD programs to develops maps on the area, drafting written narratives of the current situation and developing a written plan to market the park to the community. Resource Conservation and Development CouncilsWe worked with the Rolling Hills (Georgia) and Southwest Mississippi RC&D Councils. This work consisted of many smaller projects, including municipal and county staff training, tree inventory, tree recommendations, project coordination and tree protection ordinance development and review. Rome Street Tree InventoryWe are conducting a street tree inventory for the City of Rome, Georgia. The data will be collected in a variety of methods and inputted into a program developed by the city's staff.. The city staff will be trained in the data collection process.
